RULES: 

1. Only members of PANZ may enter the competitions. Membership is open to any person who lives in New Zealand or is a New Zealander. The annual membership fee is $25. To join, see: newzealandplaywrights.wordpress.com or email playwrightsnz@gmail.com. 

2. There is no additional entry fee for the competitions. 

3. A member may submit one 10-Minute Play (7 to 10 minutes running time) and/or one One-Act Play (30 to 50 minutes running time).

4. The name of the author(s) and/or their contact details must not appear anywhere on the script. 

5. The play must not have been performed in front of a paying audience before 31 August 2022.

5. The play must not have been performed in front of a paying audience before 1 July 2021.

2. There is no additional entry fee for the competition. Paying your membership subscription entitles you to enter without further payment. 

3. A member may submit one stage play (7 to 10 minutes) in one of the following categories:

  • Open
  • Under 25 years (at the time of submission)

4. Prizes:

  • Open: 1st, $200. 2nd, $100, 3rd, $50.
  • Under 25 years (if there are sufficient entries): 1st, $200. 2nd, $100.

5. Scripts should contain the title, a list of characters and the setting but no synopsis. The dialogue should be clearly laid out and easily distinguishable from stage directions. 

6. The name of the author(s) and/or their contact details must not appear anywhere on the script. 

7. The script must be original work. We advise that you check copyright if quoting previously published work. 

8. The play must not have been performed in front of a paying audience at the time of submission.

9. Entries open 1 July 2020 and close 30 September 2020.

10. Entries must be submitted by email to playwrightsnz@gmail.com attaching the script as a Word file. In the body of the email, include:

  • the script title
  • the name you would like to be known as (for publicity)
  • the category (Open or Under 25)

11. Results will be announced by the end of October 2020. 

12. All rights of each play will remain with the author.

  3. A member may submit one Short Play (5,000 to 11,999 words) and/or one Long Play (12,000 to 20,000 words).
  4. Scripts must be suitable for performing on stage.
  5. Scripts should contain the title, word count, a list of characters and the setting but no synopsis. The dialogue should be clearly laid out and easily distinguishable from stage directions.
  6. The name of the author(s) and/or their contact details must not appear anywhere on the script.
  7. The script must be original work. We advise that you check copyright if quoting previously published work.
  8. The play must not have been performed in front of a paying audience before 1 May 2019.
  9. Entries open 1 May 2019 and close 30 June 2019.
  10. Entries must be submitted by email to playwrightsnz@gmail.com attaching the script as a Word file.In the body of the email, include the script title(s) and the name you would like to be known as (for publicity).
  11. Results will be announced by the end of September 2019.
  12. Short Plays will be judged separately from Long Plays and will have a different Adjudicator.
  13. The Long Play Adjudicator will select a First Place (cash prize of $400), a Second Place (cash prize of $200). The Short Play Adjudicator will select a First Place (cash prize of $250), a Second Place (cash prize of $150). Each Adjudicator may commend any number of other entries. All winners will receive a certificate.
  14. Those placed first and second place in both categories will receive written assessments from Playmarket.
  15. All rights of each play will remain with the author.

  7. The name of the author(s) and/or their contact details must not appear anywhere on the script.
  8. The script must not be an adaptation of anyone else’s previously published or performed work. We advise that you check copyright if quoting previously published work.
  9. The play must not have been performed before a paying audience before 1 May 2018.

  13. The Adjudicator will select a First Place (cash prize of $150 plus an engraved trophy), a Second Place (cash prize of $50) and a Third Place.
  14. The First, Second and Third Place Winners will be invited to a workshop and public rehearsed reading of their play to be held in Palmerston North later this year. PANZ will endeavour to secure a performance of all three winning plays.
  15. In the event of a production, the director will not make alterations, additions or deletions to the Script except with the consent of the writer. For the purposes of copyright ownership, any agreed alterations, additions or deletions of any kind will be deemed to be the writer’s own work. Casting, set, sound, lighting effects and stage directions are at the discretion of the director.
  16. Once selected for performance writers may not withdraw their play from production without the permission of PANZ.
  17. All rights of each play will remain with the author.

  12. There will be two categories of entry: scripts of (A) long plays and (B) short plays.
  13. Category A (long plays): Plays must have a playing time of at least 50 minutes. There will be a Winner who will receive a cash prize of $300 plus $1,000 towards a production of their play within the next 18 months (payable once a venue and director are arranged). They will also be presented with the PANZ trophy which can be held until the next long play competition. The trophy may not be taken out of New Zealand. There will also be a Runner-up who will receive a cash prize of $200.
  14. Category B (short plays): Plays must have a playing time of between 7 and 10 minutes. There will be up to eight Finalists and, within these, First, Second and Third place winners. The First place winner will receive a cash prize of $100. The First, Second and Third place winners will be invited to a workshop later in 2017 organised by Playmarket where a professional script advisor, director and professional actors will help develop their winning plays. This will be held in Wellington or Auckland.  PANZ will promote the plays of all Finalists as a single show and is hopeful of finding at least one organisation willing to give them a public production (we were successful in 2015 and 2016).   15.   2. The entrant must be a member of PANZ. Membership is open to any person who is a long-term resident of New Zealand or is resident for the whole of 2016. The annual membership fee is $25. To join, see: newzealandplaywrights.wordpress.com. There is no additional entry fee.
  3. A member may submit up to two plays. Each play can be individually authored, co-authored, or authored as a member of a collective.
  4. The script must not be an adaptation of anyone else’s previously published or performed work. We advise that you check copyright if quoting previously published work.
  5. The name of the author(s) and/or their contact details must not appear anywhere on the script.
  6. There is no prescribed script layout.
  7. Writers are recommended to use no more than four actors.
  8. The play must not have been performed before a paying audience before 1 May 2016.
  9. Entries must be submitted by email to playwrightsnz@gmail.com attaching a completed Entry Form and the script as a Word file.
  10. Entries open 01 March 2016 and close 30 April 2016.
  11. The Adjudicator will select a First, a Second and a Third place winner and five other Finalists who will all be announced in July 2016. No member can occupy more than one Finalist place.
  12. The First, Second and Third place winners will receive a cash prize of $100, $50 and $25 respectively and will be invited to a workshop later in 2016 organised by Playmarket where a professional script advisor, director and professional actors will help develop their winning play. This will be held in Wellington or Auckland and transport costs for the writer will be paid.
  13. The winning four plays will be given a public performance late in 2016 by the Waihi Drama Society. Up to eight of the plays will be performed by Oamaru Repertory Society. PANZ will also promote the plays of all eight Finalists as a single show and is hopeful of finding an organisation willing to give them all a public production.  See our website (newzealandplaywrights.wordpress.com) for the latest information.
  14. In the event of a production, if the play runs for more than ten minutes then the writer will be obliged to shorten it. 2. The competition is open to PANZ members only. Membership is open to any person living in New Zealand who has N.Z. residency. The annual membership fee is $25. PANZ Membership Form

3. A member may submit up to three plays. Each play can be individually authored, co-authored, or authored as a member of a collective.

4. The script must not be an adaptation of anyone else’s previously published or performed work. We advise that you check copyright if quoting previously published work.

5. The name of the author(s) or their contact details must not appear anywhere on the script.

6. There is no prescribed script layout.

7. Writers are recommended to avoid a large cast or complex set.

8. The play must not have been performed before a paying audience on or before 30 April 2015.

9. Entries must be submitted by email to playwrightsnz@gmail.com attaching a completed Entry Form and the script as a Word file.

10. Entries open 01 March 2015 and close 30 April 2015.

11. The Adjudicator will select eight Finalists to be announced in July 2015. They will each receive a prize of $50. No member can occupy more than one Finalist place.

12. The Adjudicator will also select, from the Finalists, a First Place Winner (who receives an additional prize of $200) and Second Place Winner (who receives an additional prize of $100). These will be announced at the Festival.

13. The eight Finalists will all have their plays performed at a PANZ Festival to be held in Palmerston North in September 2015. If any changes to the script are required for performance, these will be discussed between the director and the writer.

14. All rights of each play will remain with the author.

20 – 40 Minute Play Competition 2014

The competition is for a play between 20 – 40 minute playing time suitable for stage, open air, restaurant or appropriate venue.  There are two categories of entry: a ‘main award’ for which all ages are eligible to enter, and an ‘under 25’ category. A play may only be entered into one of the two categories.

Main Award:
First Prize $300, plus miniature tray to keep
Second Prize $150

Under-25 Award:
Two $50 Prizes
